The
social gathering began at 7:30 pm in the Gill Annex of the
Richmond Hill Methodist Church and continued well after 10:30
pm. This event began with recognition by name of the people
who had traveled from out of state to participate in the reunion.
They included people from California, Idaho, Oklahoma, Texas,
Virginia, South Carolina and Florida. One of our classmates
who was in attendance and who has been suffering from a long
and very serious illness was also recognized. Also, the many
individuals who provided so much help in making this reunion
a success were individually recognized.
A
memorial service for our classmates and spouses who have passed
away since our last reunion in 1996 was arranged and conducted
by Jackie Simmons Mitchum. The service consisted of reading
the name, ringing a bell and lighting a candle for each individual.
The service was very touching and emotional.
Next
on the agenda, Mayor Richard Davis spoke to us about the changes
that have occurred in Richmond Hill since we were in school
here and spoke some about future plans. The growth in Richmond
Hill from a population of approximately 250 when we were here
to more than 20,000 today is very impressive.
After
the Mayor spoke, everyone was encouraged to socalize and visit
with old classmates and friends, sharing pictures, memories
and life stories. They were also invited to come up to the
mic and share their thoughts and memories with the entire
group if they were so inclined. Several people elected to
do so.
Wonderful
refreshments of cakes, cookies, candy and beverages were prepared
and provided by many of the members of the group.
The
entire evening was a wonderful experience.
